Interesting Math adventure.

Today, while having lunch with my parents at Litton’s, Barry Litton (the owner) posed a scenario that I had a hard time wrapping my head around. It was this:

Barry: If a man came to your home and said, “I’d like to work in your yard everyday for the next 31 days. All I ask for is you pay me 1 cent the first day then double it every day after for the next 31 days.” How much do you think you would end up paying?

Me: No idea… I can’t do that much math in my head.

Barry: over Ten Million dollars

Me: *gulp*

So, the more I thought about this the more impossible it sounded… I mean, we’re talking about pennies!! So, here’s the Math. One employee, 31 days of employment, 1 cent first day, doubling everyday after.

Day 1: 1 cent
Day 2: 2 cents
Day 3: 4 cents
Day 4: 8 cents
Day 5: 16 cents
Day 6: 32 cents
Day 7: 64 cents
Day 8: 128 cents = $1.28
Day 9: 256 cents = $2.56

Create a Shortcut to open in your Alternate Browser

Here’s a quick and simple “How To” for you. I had this question posed by a client the other day and it made me think. This Client is a fan of FireFox. It is his default browser and tries his best to NEVER use Internet Explorer. But, as is the case with most things, the more you try to keep from using something that’s right when you find out you have to.

This was the case here. He had a vendor’s website that would only work in IE AND he needed to use this website alot so, he had a shortcut on his desktop to get to it. The problem is the Internet Shortcut will open in his Default Browser… Firefox. Now, since he uses IE so infrequently, you would think – just make the website in question the home page and be done with it. But that won’t help if you have more than one shortcut.

So, here we go.

First, right-click on your desktop and select New —> Shortcut
This will open a new Window. Here you need to click “Browse” and Navigate to the folder containing the executable for the browser you are wanting to use.
After selecting the executable you need to add your URL to the end. Make sure and put the URL outside the quotes surrounding the executable and make sure and put a space between the closing quote and the URL.
Next, just give your new shortcut a creative name and click finish.

Now you have a URL Shortcut that will open in your non-default browser.

This doesn’t have to be just for Internet Explorer… This will work for any browser you want used for this particular shortcut. Firefox, Chrome, Opera… whatever.

Just a note to all you music lovers in the Knoxville area. The Knoxville Wind Symphony will be holding a concert this Sunday, March 7, at 4:00 at the Historic Tennessee Theatre. Here’s the News announcement from the KWS website:

Wind Symphony and Youth Wind Ensemble will Blow You Away!

Batten Down the Hatches: March will begin with quite a bit of WIND in the Tennessee Theatre.

At 4 pm on Sunday, March 7 the Knoxville Wind Symphony and East Tennessee Youth Wind Ensemble will perform concerts in the Tennessee Theatre, as well as a special portion of the concert featuring a combined wind orchestra over 100 strong.

The concert will feature a work by local composer & horn player W. Mark Harrell entitled Fanfare for the Lord Lieutenant.

Concluding the concert, the combined forces will perform Mark Camphouse’s A Movement for Rosa, a work built around the hymn “We Shall Overcome” and composed in 1992 in honor of the now-late civil rights heroine Rosa Parks.

HOWDY!!! We have (finally) a return of the Friday Funnies!

I’m really sorry it’s been so long since the last update, but the Funnies in my mail have been slim here of late… Either that or *cough* they weren’t “appropriate” to place on the internet. Well, not appropriate for this site. But this little Gem came in and made me laugh… At any rate, here is this week’s edition of the Friday Funnies.

How To Clean A Toilet:

And add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.
Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds.
Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.
Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a ‘power-wash’ and rinse’.
Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.
Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.
The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, And run outside where he will dry himself off.
Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean..

The Apple Retail Store Hates You -

I recently visited the Apple store to exchange a defective power adapter which was still under warranty. I still have the defective adapter, as it has now cost more time and effort than it was originally worth.

What I have lost is time, money, and trust in the ethics of the retail store. What I have gained is disdain for their tactics and a sick feeling every time I hear “Apple Store.”

Why don’t I just dump my MacBook Pro and go with a PC? Because my employer uses Mac-based programs and hardware and I don’t see my building replacing 300+ machines any time soon. Whether “fanboy” or “hater,” my use of Apple products for work will change very little. However, my personal purchase plans have already changed and I hope others might be spared some of the inconvienience and inepttude I experienced in my last visit:

Short version:

Rather than complete a simple warranty exchange, they want me to make an appointment to drive back to the store to exchange a defective power adapter that is well within the one-year warranty. Seriously. They actually wanted to put me on “Standby” and expected me to hang around for 2-3 hours in case a “genius”

Windows 7 Telnet Client

I dropped to a command prompt today on my Windows 7 machine to telnet into my Cisco Router and found, that once Again the Microsoft telnet client is not installed.

It seems that, as with Windows vista, the Microsoft Telnet client is not installed by default. But luckily it’s pretty easy to install, just follow these simple steps:

Click the Start “Pearl” and select the Control Panel from the menu.
Once the Control Panel opens, double click the Programs and Features applet.
A new window will open. Select “Turn Windows Features on or off” from the left menu.
Again, a new window will open. Check the box beside “Telnet Client” … Also, if you want to enable your “Telnet Server” or “TFTP Client” you can select them at this time also. Click Ok after you have finished your selections.
Windows will not prompt you that it is installing the components.

After if completes you will be able to make use of the Windows Telnet client.
