Disable Vista's UAC

I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate now on my main computer now since March 18, 2007. And, I have to tell you I'm very pleased with the results so far.

I've had one blue screen in that time... AND it was completley my fault, I tried installing a program that was not intended to run under vista. It said it was not compatible.. but I had to try and was slapped down for my cheek! Other than that, Windows Vista is turning out to be a VERY GOOD operating system. My wife is using a MAC book pro with OS X and she has had more problems with program freezes and locking up than I do on either my XP of Vista Machines.

Enough of that... Some of the major complaints I see on the web have to deal with the UAC (User Access Control). So, not that I recommend doing this, as the new Vista UAC (User Access Control) adds a lot of security to the new Vista operating system but, here are a couple of simple methods for turning off the UAC in Windows Vista.

First there are many ways to turn off the UAC but these two seem the simplest.

Option 1: Using MSCONFIG

  1. Click the Start "Pearl" and type msconfig into the search box and hit enter.
  2. Click on the Tools tab in the window that opens. Scroll to the section in the list labeled "Disable UAC" and click that line.
  3. When you click that line it will fill in the box beside the Launch button.. Click Launch
  4. This will open a command window. When it finishes the command line, close the window.
  5. Close the msconfig window and reboot your computer.
To turn the UAC back on.. repeat the steps above selecting "Enable UAC" in the tools menu. Reboot the PC

Option 2: Usnig the Conttrol Panel

  1. Log into an "Administrative Account"
  2. Click the "Pearl"..
  3. Click "Control Panel"
  4. Click "User Accounts"
  5. Click "Turn User Account Control on or off"
  6. Un-check the box beside " Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer".
  7. Click OK
  8. Reboot the computer

To turn the UAC back on with this method.. Simply repeat the steps above and "RE-check" the "Use User Account Control" box. Again, I don't recommend doing this... It's very little aggravation for the added security.. But, Now you can if it's driving you up the wall.
