Vista Service Pack 1 - Short Update

Just a quick note... For some reason the Service Pack one update cleared the activation of my Vista Ultimate install and I was required to re-activate.

Be prepared for that.

Wonder Why??

Well.. what are the specs for your wife's notebook? If I've found out one thing about Vista, it's that you really need a minimum of 2gig Ram and a video card with it's own memory--256mb-512mb. If Vista has to share RAM with the video card it tends to sloooowwww down.. And I don't think the Service Pack will help that any.

What is the brand of the notebook?? Any bloatware to remove?

Definitely be ready to re-activate your copy of Vista.. I found another user over at the Windows Vista Team Blog : http://windowsvistablog.com/ That reported a similar situation only with more complicated results.

Below taken from http://windowsvistablog.com/ :

"I just installed the offline SP1 installer without any problems and it took about 30 minutes.

However, I was asked to activate my copy of Windows which I had not previously been asked prior to the upgrade. On trying to activate the product key online I was informed that it was "already in use". I tried re-keying in my product key and repeating the process to no avail. In the end I used the phone system method and this worked, although I have no idea why. My copy of Windows is a Dell OEM Vista Home Premium Upgrade from MCE. It has only been installed on one machine."

It has 1gig shared, that must be the main problem. Maybe I'll up the ram and get a nice little ati 128 for her first and then look at the service pack. The notebook is a custom I put together for her, no other superfluous software on there, just Open Office, FireFox, McAffee AV/SpyWare. I just asked her what she notices to be the main task which she experiences slow operation and she just mentioned that the McAffee scan on boot or wake has the biggest effect. That must be hogging a bunch of resources, I will have a look at the resource meter to see what its doing to the sys resources.
