New site in progress: HornSpit dot com

Got a new site officially in progress now. This is a site that came about from one long night in the Opera Pit. As another horn player and I were talking, about internet needs none the less, HornSpit.com was born.

This site is planned to be a repository of all things irreverent about the French Horn (or properly known as: Horn). Funnies, how tos, How to-nots, etc. So if there are any would be Horn players out there that would like to contribute to, what I am sure will be history in the making, please feel free to let me know. The site is still in the preliminary stages but should be functional soon.

So, keep a watch out, HornSpit.com is coming soon!

Firefox RC1 released

FireFox 3 Release Candidate 1

FireFox 3 has been released for testing purposes only. There is a high probability that any "Addon" you have installed will be incompatible with this new browser so, keep that in mind if you choose to download and install.

Here's what Mozilla has to say about this latest release:

Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 33 months. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 14,000 updates including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Firefox 3 has been built on top of this new platform resulting in a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer website and Firefox add-on developers.

More Secure

  • One-click site info: Click the site favicon in the location bar to see who owns the site and to check if your connection is protected from eavesdropping. Identity verification is prominently displayed and easier to understand. When a site uses Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, the site favicon button will turn green and show the name of the company you're connected to.
  • Malware Protection: malware protection warns users when they arrive at sites which are known to install viruses, spyware, trojans or other malware.
  • New Web Forgery Protection page: the content of pages suspected as web forgeries is no longer shown.
  • New SSL error pages: clearer and stricter error pages are used when Firefox encounters an invalid SSL certificate.
  • Add-ons and Plugin version check: Firefox now automatically checks add-on and plugin versions and will disable older, insecure versions.
  • Secure add-on updates: to improve add-on update security, add-ons that provide updates in an insecure manner will be disabled.
  • Anti-virus integration: Firefox will inform anti-virus software when downloading executables.
  • Vista Parental Controls: Firefox now respects the Vista system-wide parental control setting for disabling file downloads.
  • Effective top-level domain (eTLD) service better restricts cookies and other restricted content to a single domain.
  • Better protection against cross-site JSON data leaks.

Out of Office

Forgot to mention I will be out of the office today (Friday May 2). I have access to e-mail should anything arise.

Remote Desktop /console change in Vista SP1

A while back I blogged about Remote Desktop in Windows XP. Since the start of my Vista Quest I have continued to use the Vista remote desktop with great success. That is until I installed Services pack 1.

Here lately I've been noticing some differences when I log into some servers I manage. Nothing drastic mind you but there were some things that were no longer the same. So I got to Googeling...

I use the /console when logging in to these servers. For those who don't know the /console switch gives you the ability to log into a remote server with out using a Terminal Service client and it also logs you into the desktop that you would see if you were standing at the machine. So, If you started a process that was going to take a long time, you could log into that session remotely and check on or finish the process. And if you needed to install some software that could not be installed "remotely" the /console switch would allow you to continue.

With the introduction of Vista SP1 the /console switch no longer holds the same function. They have changed the /console to /admin The main reason for this is for compatibility with the new Server 2008 platform.

Server 2008 doesn't have a concept of a console that you can login to as that session (session 0) is for services and doesn't have an interactive session associated with it. The /admin switch is to login to the session that would have the physical keyboard/screen attached to it.

So... For those of you using Vista with Service Pack 1 you need to start using /admin instead of /console. It appears this is true even connecting to Server 2003.

150 miles per Galleon?!??!?

Oh Man, Oh Man, Oh Man!!!! My cousin forwarded this to me the other day. I just took a second and checked it out. Amazing!!

If this thing is real, my gas troubles are over. With gas getting up to $3.00 per gallon here in TN I would spend the extra $$$$$ to get that kind of mileage.

Check this out:

You can read more on the company at their website.
