Fresh and New

March 23, 2009 By Robert Owen 2 Comments

It’s still a work-in-progress but, as you can see things have changed up a bit around here. I have been sporting the same ole look for the site for quite a while and decided that it was time to update. My blog has become an important section of the site and I needed a way to keep it updated while keeping the main area of the site in one fail swoop.

I’ve been a big fan of Ray Camden’s BlogCFC for quite a while. And, while it’s a great blogging platform and has some basic CMS abilities, it’s not quite as polished a product as WordPress. I needed a way to reduce the amount of time I spent updating my site to a bare minimum and, WordPress fits that bill perfectly. I’ll admit I know nothing about PHP so, this gave me an opportunity to dive in head first.

Installing PHP on my Windows 2003 server was quite an interesting experience. Well, not so much interesting as completely frustrating. The msi installer for wordpress didn’t work correctly so I did a manual install. This got the files on the computer but I could not determine how to tell PHP where to look for the PHP.ini file. It wanted to look for it in the windows folder but, I didn’t want to put it there. I  couldn’t determine how to make PHP look somewhere else so,  I ended up putting it there and all was happy. Then all that was left was adding the .PHP extension to the IIS configuration for the site I wanted to use it on. I’ll blog more on that set-up later.

Ray Camden is working on a new release to BlogCFC… version 6… And there look to be some exciting things coming in that release. So, it is possible that I might switch things back in the future. Now, I hope you all enjoy the Fresh and New setup to the site. There are still a few holes… incomplete posts from the concersion, a few missing images and if you had subscribed to the previous set-up you will need to sign-up again. You can find that link on the right.

So go ahead, read through some posts, leave a comment or two and subscribe to the Blog. Hey, there might even be a silly video or two over there on the side from time to time… Some with us in them and some without. But, they will none the less be highly entertaining. So come back often and check out the new additions.

Thanks! It made sense to switch to WordPress. I was wasting a lot of time when I did updates on the old site. I’m working on some url rewrites now so I can keep traffic from the old links.
