Windows Defender, Vista and the 0x80240029 Error

April 4, 2007 By Robert Owen

I noticed today that my windows vista computer had not received the updates that I knew had been released. My automatic updates are on however, now some of the windows “extras” were no longer showing either.

I then noticed that the new “Windows Defender” Spyware program was showing an error that it's defenitions were also out of date. I tried to force an update on Windows Defender to receive error 0x80240029.

Checking Microsoft's Site returned a possible solution that actually worked.

Open Windows Update on Vista by clicking:

Start—>All Prgrams —> Windows Update

Then click the “Change Settings link found on the left side of the menu.

Next, turn off automatic updates AND uncheck “Use Microsoft Update” if that is checked.

The go back to the main screen of the “Update area” and click “Check for Updates”.

Vista should now find the latest updates, any extra content that is available, and any new Windows Defender defenition files. Reboot your PC then be sure to turn automatic updates back on but leave “Microsoft Update” off.
