Internet Speed Tests

March 28, 2007 By Robert Owen

Just how fast IS you connection? I know... your ISP says that you are getting 3meg down x 768 up but, are you? If your Internet connection seems slow, you should do some checking before complaining to your ISP. There are many sites available with Internet speed tests. Internet speed tests let you know how your connection is actually doing at that point in time. And, with some reference tests done you go back to ISP with more information than; "Hey my internet is slow!!" You can go to Google, … [Read more...]

MAC Security? Oh my, Oh my…

March 21, 2007 By Robert Owen

I got a note this morning about an interesting article over at IT Security. It's been called one of the safest operating systems of all time, but Mac's OS X Tiger may not be as safe as it seems. This list provides its top security issues and how to plug them. They've just released a report detailing some "Holes" in the OS X Tiger Operating system. They've given some suggestions on how to plug these holes. If you're a MAC user or a thinking about being a MAC user … [Read more...]

Exporting FireFox Book Marks

March 21, 2007 By Robert Owen

One of the things with this Vista machine is the fact that I didn't have all my trusty book marks from FireFox any longer. It's easy to get your Favorites from Internet Explorer... just copy the Favorites folder in your user profile to the new machine and you're done. But, FireFox.... there's no file to copy for them. But, luckily in FireFox it's easy as well. … [Read more...]

GotCFM?

February 27, 2007 By Robert Owen

Just read over at Ray Camden's Blog about a new site released by Rey Bango called GotCFM.com. GotCFM.com is a site dedicated to promoting ColdFusion-related technologies. It is a site for CFML evangelism and knowledge. It is a site that will let people understand why the CF community loves this engine and why ColdFusion-centric technologies *ARE* an amazing choice for building scalable and engaging websites. So, take some time and go over and submit all of your Coldfusion powered … [Read more...]

CSS – Max width help

February 1, 2007 By Robert Owen

Trying to keep things simple, sometimes I use the 'max-width' and 'min-width' properties of CSS. Makes it simple if you are letting someone upload images to a site for you. For example, blogCFC has a slideshow function. Here's an example. Ok.. so you've got this slideshow and you are letting someone else upload the images or create totally new slideshows.. Telling them to keep the images a to a certain width is all fine but.. People tend to "forget" and then you … [Read more...]

January 6, 2007 By Robert Owen

Just a quick reminder to everyone out there... It's a New Year ... (Yippeeeee!!!) If you're still doing it by hand, don't forget to update the Copyright Dates on your web sites. If you're doing it automatically.. Good for you!! Keep up the Good work. Just check to see that it did what it was supposed to do. If you want to do it automatically, I blogged about a couple of methods a while back: Update-Copyright-in-Javascript-and-Coldfusion Check it out... great time saver.. … [Read more...]

Simple Pop-up Window

December 28, 2006 By Robert Owen

I tend to use this little bit of javascript quite a bit so I thought I would share. You can use this little javascript to add a "Pop-up" window effect to links in your website. For example, if you have a page of product images and Item numbers you can make them link to a "Pop-up" window with the item details. … [Read more...]
