A Picture a Day – Day 1 Official

March 1, 2011 By Robert Owen

Ok, here we go...  Today is the official start for a picture a day!  Well, "a" picture is a little too limiting.  Some days I might feel a need for more.   Like today.   Today, I was all worried because by 3:30 I didn't have any potential shots for today's start.  Then I started getting texts from friends  asking me if my house was ok.  Naturally this prompted me to check on things and, "lo and behold", we were having some kind of freaky flooding event on my street.  I don't guess it was … [Read more...]

A Picture a Day

February 27, 2011 By Robert Owen

Traffic on the insterstate

I'm gonna try something new to keep myself posting.  I'm going to post a "picture a day".  Let's see how long I can keep it up.  Want to take any bets on how long it will last?  I'm not actually off to a very good start.  I had intentions on starting this last Monday (2/21/2011), I even took some pictures during the week but, as you can see, I didn't get them posted.  So, I'll play catch up now and start fresh tomorrow.  … [Read more...]

Site of the week: Let Me Google That for You

February 20, 2011 By Robert Owen

Let me Google that for you

Picture it,  you're working hard on a project - totally focused on... whatever.  And somebody says... "Hey, [insert your name here],  how many days are there in February?"  ...  or, they say something like: "Yo, [insert name here],  what is the capital of Wisconsin?"  or even maybe something like:  "Hey, [your name here again], where can I find the world's largest ball of yarn?" Hey, these aren't bad questions, right?  No, they're perfectly fine.  And as such, being the nice guy/gal you are,  … [Read more...]

Help Me Finish a Story

February 20, 2011 By Robert Owen

Many years ago when I was in College,  in an overly stagnate Orchestral rehearsal (I think we were waiting on a violin "sectional" to end or something like that),  the story below started taking shape.   This "little ditty" was composed by myself, a fellow Hornist, and a Clarinetist.  Now,  I don't remember which of us wrote which section,  this paper had seen better days so, I will leave the credits off.  But, I did leave the section pauses where each new addition was added. Now, I know this … [Read more...]

Interesting Pay Scale

June 19, 2010 By Robert Owen

Interesting Math adventure. Today, while having lunch with my parents at Litton's,  Barry Litton (the owner) posed a scenario that I had a hard time wrapping my head around.  It was this: Barry:  If a man came to your home and said, "I'd like to work in your yard everyday for the next 31 days.  All I ask for is you pay me 1 cent the first day then double it every day after for the next 31 days." How much do you think you would end up paying? Me:  No idea... I can't do that much math … [Read more...]

Warranty Schmarranty

January 7, 2010 By Robert Owen

Here's an interesting read about Apple's wonderful customer service. Note my sarcasm?  :-) Anyway, here's a short clip of the article. The Apple Retail Store Hates You  - I recently visited the Apple store to exchange a defective power adapter which was still under warranty.  I still have the defective adapter, as it has now cost more time and effort than it was originally worth. What I have lost is time, money, and trust in the ethics of the retail store.  What I have gained is … [Read more...]

Pecan Party :: Carnage

September 28, 2009 By Robert Owen

So,  I've got this HUGE Pecan tree in my yard.   And, for the last few weeks,  the Squirrels around here have been bombarding my office window the nuts from that tree.  The really have sounded like they were having a great time.  Throwing their shells at my windows, then running up a Dogwood tree and hiding till I look away.  Quite a show let me tell you.  I should probably set up a video camera.... Maybe a webcam.  Yes,  we could have a "Squirrel Pecan Party Cam" in the back! These guys sure … [Read more...]
