Email Scam – Trying another route

June 15, 2009 By Robert Owen

I got another Scam attempt in the e-mail tonight and thought I would share. I may have to make a whole new section of the site for these pitiful attempts. I guess it must sucker somebody, else they wouldn't continue the effort. Maybe since I've ignored all of their other attempts, they decided they needed to switch directions. Received: from cantv.net (rs20s9.datacenter.cha.cantv.net [200.109.127.76]) by rs26s12.datacenter.cha.cantv.net (8.14.3/8.14.3/3.0) with ESMTP id n5F10Xop008234; Sun, … [Read more...]

Here’s to MAC Security

June 13, 2009 By Robert Owen

This was another "Eaten" Post. I'm adding it back because I find it is still relevant information in the whole MAC vs PC debate going on these days. The information below is slightly dated but, it really hasn't changed much in the past year. Problems still exist on BOTH sides. (Although the MAC guys would lead you to believe otherwise.) Well, we always hear of the Apple Macintosh's superior OS security... How they never get viruses; never lock-up, No "Holes" in their OS etc.. And, now that … [Read more...]

Load DLL’s needed for Kernel – XP

June 11, 2009 By Robert Owen

Had a user call reporting their computer shutting off suddenly. On reboot, they received the message "On last operation CPU reported a thermal event" Well.. This told me that the CPU fan had probably choked and the CPU had overheated causing the PC shut down. Upon inspection I found my initial thought was only partially correct. The CPU had overheated, that was obvious, because the heat sync below the fan was completely clogged with dust... or a small feline, I'm not sure which. BUT, The fan … [Read more...]

Remote Desktop

June 10, 2009 By Robert Owen

Here is another Post that must have tasted good because, Wordpress ate it when I converted. It should still be useful to someone out there... When Windows XP came out, we were introduced to the new and improved remote desktop. It's Great! Believe me, I use it regularly. Well, when you use it to connect to XP workstations you get to connect to the console session. However, when trying to connect to a Server 2000 or Server 2003 machine you get connected to a "Remote Desktop" not ever to the … [Read more...]

To Clean? or Not To Clean?!?

June 10, 2009 By Robert Owen

This is another post that got lost in the WordPress conversion. A good friend of mine called me a few weeks back having trouble with his modem..... I know, that title and first line probably remind you of one of those jokes...    A horse, Rabbit, and Turtle went into a bar... Anyway, we had just had a large set of storms here in town and this was really of no surprise as I had been playing fix-it already that day. Turns out that lightning had come in on his phone line and fried his modem... … [Read more...]

WordPress and Smileys

June 10, 2009 By Robert Owen

I don't know about you but, sometimes on the web (twitter especially) the humor or sarcasm meant in a statement can be lost. So, I always try to add a little smiley so people know I'm not such a big jerk.  On a similar front, Wordpress will convert text smileys into their graphic equivalent . The problem is, I can't ever remember what the  "Proper" text for the smiley is supposed to be. I did a little searching (via Bing, BTW)  and came across this list of smileys that will work with … [Read more...]

The First Microsoft Bing Ad

June 5, 2009 By Robert Owen

I ran across this a little while ago. Microsoft has launched it's first Bing commercial and, it's not terrible. Nothing Earth Shattering but it's a pretty good commercial. I've used "Bing" a few times and I'll say one thing, it is quite fast returning results. I've not put it head to head with Google yet to see what it does or doesn't get but it is fast and I like the way it sorts the results. I think I will try a few head to head searches this weekend to see how they compare. And, I may even … [Read more...]
